Expanding Kharkiv's Metro: A New Line Takes Shape

According to Novyny.live: Kharkiv is pushing ahead with the construction of two new stations on its third metro line, backed by a 320 million euro budget. Half of this funding comes from a loan by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), while the European Investment Bank (EIB) provides the other half. The project will extend the third line by 3.47 kilometers and introduce the 'Derzhavynska' and 'Odeska' stations.

Located near the Kharkiv Meat Processing Plant, the 'Derzhavynska' station is designed to offer convenient access for local residents and visitors. The plans also include building the 'Oleksiivske' electric depot, which can house up to 100 railcars to service the new line. To clear the way for this development, the Kharkiv City Council has already spent 5.3 million euros on completing a relocation program. Notably, Derzhavynska Street was renamed in 2023 in honor of Dmytro Kotsiubailo—a fallen Hero of Ukraine known by the call sign 'Da Vinci.'

For this metro expansion, authorities have acquired 86 land plots and real estate properties. This initiative aims to enhance Kharkiv's transportation network and ease traffic congestion, while also creating jobs during both the construction and operational phases.

Why This Project Matters for the City

The new metro line represents a major step forward for Kharkiv’s urban development, improving connectivity and reducing gridlock. With international investment backing it, the project is expected to boost local infrastructure and raise the quality of life for residents, addressing modern challenges in a growing city.

By strengthening public transit, such efforts can serve as a foundation for long-term urban growth and better living conditions for Kharkiv’s citizens.
