Israel has expanded the goals of its nearly year-long campaign in Gaza to include protecting the northern front against Hezbollah, increasing concerns of escalating conflict with the Lebanese militant group.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Security Cabinet voted to add "the safe return of northern residents to their homes" to the war goals, Netanyahu's office said. Analysts believe this decision marks a shift in the priorities of the Israel Defense Forces amid the ongoing war against Hamas militants in Gaza, writes Financial Times.
During the weekly Cabinet meeting on September 15, Netanyahu said he understood the suffering of northern Israel's residents and promised that the current situation would not last long.
