Ostapenko's Apology After Conflict with Townsend
According to The Sun: Jelena Ostapenko apologized for her words in which she accused Taylor Townsend of lacking education during a tense incident on the court.
The Latvian tennis player lost in the second round of the US Open 7-5, 6-1, and after that match, she confronted Townsend, accusing her of 'disrespect' and 'bad traditions' in tennis.
GettyOstapenko stated that she considers Townsend to be 'classless' and that she has 'no education'. She also expected an apology from her opponent for the situation at the net.
Townsend, who is Black, informed that Ostapenko threatened her with revenge outside the United States. Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka called Ostapenko's comments 'horrible', emphasizing that such words have no place in the United States.
Ostapenko, who has been at the center of controversy before, denied allegations of racism but admitted that her words may have offended many.
Apology on Social Media
On Saturday, while packing her bags for departure from New York, Ostapenko explained on her Instagram that her words referred only to 'etiquette' in tennis, not educational issues.
“Hi everyone – I wanted to apologize for some words I said during the match.”
“English is not my native language, so when I was talking about education, I meant only etiquette in tennis.”
“But I understand how my words could have offended many off the court.”
She also emphasized that it is important to continuously learn and grow as a person and an athlete.
Townsend's Position
Townsend, on the other hand, expressed gratitude for the support she received from fans, noting that it is important to stand up for 'people of color'.
“I received so much support from many people, and that is what it’s all about.”
