Youth unemployment may lead to loss of benefits

According to The Sun: Young people who are unemployed may find themselves without social benefits if they do not take advantage of the new government proposal regarding paid work.

Rachel Reeves intends to reduce social security spending through the Youth Guarantee program aimed at preventing long-term unemployment among young people.

All young people receiving Universal Credit for 18 months without work or education will receive a paid placement.

The Chancellor will also present how youth can obtain guarantees for either college placements or opportunities for apprenticeship in businesses.

These programs are likely to concern youth aged 18 to 21.

Given the sharp rise in unemployment, which has reached a four-year high this summer, there are concerns that the increase in national insurance could hinder the labor market.

Reeves will say in her conference speech today:

“I will never be satisfied while too many people lose their potential by freezing outside of employment, education or training.”

“This is unjustifiable. It's bad for business, bad for taxpayers, bad for our economy, and leaves a mark on people's prospects for life.”

Currently, nearly a million young people aged 16-24 are not in education, employment, or training.

This accounts for 12 percent of this age group, which has increased by nearly a third over the last four years.

Full details of the program are expected to be presented in the budget at the end of November.

The shadow chancellor, Mel Stride, criticized the government yesterday, accusing it of increasing hiring costs.

He noted:

“You won't attract more youth to work by punishing those businesses that hire them.”

“The answer is not to increase government funding — it's growth, tax cuts, and a job-oriented economy.”
GettyThe Youth Guarantee program aims to reduce youth unemployment, which has become particularly relevant amid rising numbers of individuals without jobs. The labor market situation remains challenging, and government initiatives may be an important step toward improving economic conditions for youth. It is essential to monitor further details of the program and potential reactions from the business sector.
