35-year-old Essex gave SunSport a unique insight into his training process under the guidance of his uncle and coach, Tony Sims. He doesn't hide his smile when discussing the risks of damaging his attractive face.
I have no worries about how I will look. Either way, teeth can be restored. Something can be done, it's all good. I still need new teeth!
Tony once banned his nephew from boxing, believing he was too 'good-looking' for fights.
Now Essex, along with Tony's daughter Demi, will debut in Misfits on the same card after months of training together.
Sims even organized sparring sessions for his daughter and nephew with professional boxers to prepare them for the fights.
This is a tough sport because during sparring you are trying to hurt your partner, and he is trying to hurt you. So various mishaps happen, and you start to feel pain in your hands, shoulders, ribs – everything hurts.
Essex has stepped away from television projects to focus on boxing, training six days a week, twice a day.
I think it's a career change, which is probably strange to say. But right now the plan is to get better fights. I see it as the beginning of something big and I'm taking it step by step.
Joey plans to return to training immediately after his debut fight.
Joey has given up TV work to focus on boxing.
