Demands on Russia from the EU
Kaja Kallas, the European Union's representative for foreign affairs and security policy, emphasized the need to increase pressure on Russia for a quicker peace during a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on August 25. This was reported by a correspondent from the FREEДОМ channel.
EU Speaker's Statement
Anita Hipper, the EU spokesperson for foreign affairs, shared details of this dialogue during a briefing in Brussels on August 26.
'She [Kaja Kallas] indeed participated in a phone conversation with Marco Rubio and several foreign ministers. The High Representative highly praised the efforts of the U.S. to establish peace but emphasized that pressure on Russia needs to be increased to prompt it to compromise. In this regard, the EU is working on the 19th package of sanctions,' the spokesperson commented.
Support for Ukraine
Kallas noted that it is important to have reliable security guarantees and emphasized the EU's contribution to supporting Ukraine.
'In particular, the EU has allocated about 170 billion euros for various types of assistance to Ukraine, including nearly 60 billion euros for military support, particularly through the European Peace Facility. It is also planned to supply 2 million large-caliber shells by the end of 2025. Additionally, the EU supports the training of the Ukrainian army, training nearly 80,000 soldiers. This work continues and includes many other initiatives,' Hipper reported.
Security Guarantees for Ukraine
The EU spokesperson also mentioned that discussions on possible security guarantees for Ukraine are ongoing, and these discussions will continue during the informal meeting of ministers.
Earlier, it became known that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiga, during a phone conversation with the U.S. Secretary of State and European colleagues, presented Kyiv's position on security guarantees and called for increasing sanctions against Moscow in case of continued delays in negotiations.
These statements underscore the proactive stance of the European Union in supporting Ukraine in the context of increasing tensions on the international stage. Pressure on Russia will remain a key component of the EU's foreign policy, especially in the context of new sanctions and military assistance to Ukraine, which will help strengthen its security and independence.
