'Minotaur' Triumphs at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival

According to Novyny.live: Andrei Zvyagintsev’s drama 'Minotaur' claimed the Grand Prix at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, marking the director’s return to the big screen after a nine-year break. Zvyagintsev, who left Russia in 2022, shot the film in the fall of that year. Its story follows Gleb, the head of a logistics company, and includes a scenario where 14 employees demand to be drafted into mobilization.

Olena Khalik, editor-in-chief of the publication 'News.LIVE', secured accreditation to cover the festival, highlighting the media’s role at such a major event. Reflecting on the situation in Ukraine, Zvyagintsev shared his emotions:

“I feel incredible pain and fear when I think about what Ukraine is going through right now. 'Shame' is the least of what I experience. But I am truly powerless to change anything. If even powerful institutions like the UN have proven helpless against this war, then something is clearly wrong with our world. What remains for an ordinary person caught in this nightmare? In my own way, I did what I could—I made a film without a hint of propaganda.” - Andrei Zvyagintsev

Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Artistic Journey

Zvyagintsev’s debut feature 'The Return' won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2003, underscoring his high professional standing and recognition in the global film industry. Now, with 'Minotaur', he returns to major cinema, continuing to explore complex social and personal themes that resonate today.

The Grand Prix win for 'Minotaur' not only reaffirms Zvyagintsev’s talent but also highlights the importance of his work amid contemporary social challenges. Serving as a commentary on events in Ukraine, the film reflects the artist’s efforts to illuminate difficult issues people face in conflict zones. This award may draw greater global attention to Ukrainian themes in cinema and underscores the role of art during times of social crisis.
