Van Gogh painting sold for over $32 million.
Renowned Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh sold his painting at Christie's auction house in Hong Kong for $32.2 million, reports Le Monde.
This canvas marks the artist's transition from dark realism to bright impressionism. Although the painting sold for a large sum, it did not meet expectations of reaching a record price.
Had the bidding reached a higher amount, it could have surpassed the painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat titled "Warrior," which in 2021 sold for 323.6 million Hong Kong dollars and became the most expensive Western painting sold in Asia. But at this auction, Van Gogh's painting sold for 250 million Hong Kong dollars.
The painting titled "Moored Boats" was the main lot at the evening auction held on September 26 as part of the opening of Christie's new headquarters in Hong Kong.
Van Gogh painted this work in 1887 in the French town of Asnières, located near Paris. It was there that the artist created more than 40 of his works.
The painting "Moored Boats" belonged to the Italian royal family of the Bourbon-Two Sicilies.
