When to take down the Christmas tree after the holidays: experts named the optimal date.
According to ТСН: At the end of the Christmas and New Year period, many people wonder when it is appropriate to take down the Christmas tree and festive decorations. There are many opinions: some do it immediately after Christmas, while others leave the decor until New Year or even longer. However, experts indicate the optimal dates that most people consider traditional.
Popular dates for taking down the Christmas tree
Many take down the tree on Twelfth Night – January 5. This holiday is considered a symbolic end of the festive season. Experts note that this tradition dates back to the 4th century, when the church calendar clearly defined the boundaries of the Christmas period.
Another alternative date is January 6, when the Epiphany is celebrated. This holiday, also known as the Day of the Three Kings or Little Christmas, has become another popular reference point for those deciding when to say goodbye to the tree, garlands, and ornaments. For many, Epiphany logically concludes the festive cycle.
Traditions and superstitions
Some families, on the contrary, do not wait until January. There is a belief that leaving the tree after midnight on December 31 can 'carry over' the problems of the old year into the new one. For this reason, some people remove festive decor even before the New Year begins to start with a clean slate.
Church recommendations also vary. According to Catholic tradition, it is most appropriate to take down Christmas decorations on Candlemas, which is celebrated 40 days after the birth of Jesus Christ. Some believe that taking down decorations before this date is bad luck.
At the same time, there are opposing beliefs. Some superstitions say that it is undesirable to leave Christmas decorations after January 6. There are also popular traditions associated with mistletoe: it is not recommended to bring it into the home until after the New Year, regardless of the removal of other decorations.
Personal choice
Experts emphasize that, despite the variety of dates, traditions, and superstitions, the final decision rests with each individual. For some, taking down the tree means the end of the holidays and preparing the home for everyday life, while for others, it reflects a desire to keep the warmth and coziness of the atmosphere for as long as possible.
It should also be noted that earlier discussions focused on how a Christmas tree can be both an ecological choice and a source of additional emissions. Experts compared the impact of real and artificial trees on the environment.
