Ex-MP from Banned Pro-Russian Party Arrested for Funding Kremlin via Business in Occupied Ukraine.
Former Lawmaker Detained in Kyiv Region
According to Novyny.live: A former member of Ukraine's parliament, elected from the now-banned pro-Russian 'Opposition Platform — For Life' (OPFL) party, has been arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Russia. The individual is accused of channeling funds to the Russian state budget through a business operating in occupied Ukrainian territory. Following the full-scale invasion, the suspect continued this commercial activity in areas under Russian control, raising significant alarm within Ukrainian law enforcement agencies.
Investigators revealed that in 2022, the ex-MP officially re-registered his enterprise under Russian Federation law. Furthermore, he procured over 1 million euros worth of technological equipment from Russia, with the order processed through an affiliated entity in Belarus. These actions, indicating active cooperation with the aggressor state, form the basis for a formal suspicion of aiding an aggressor state.
Legal Proceedings and Broader Context
The suspect is currently in custody and faces a potential sentence of up to 12 years imprisonment with asset confiscation. His case is complicated by the fact that his business operates in temporarily occupied territory and pays taxes into the Russian budget, directly financing its war effort. This arrest is part of a wider crackdown by Ukrainian authorities on individuals suspected of materially supporting Russia's war machine.
This incident reflects a persistent pattern of threats stemming from collaboration with Russia. For instance, on July 8, 2024, a Russian general ordered a strike on the 'Okhmatdyt' children's hospital, and earlier in March, Ukraine's SBU security service and BEB economic bureau uncovered a corruption scheme within energy companies. These events underscore the ongoing dangers posed by internal cooperation with the aggressor.
The detention of the former parliamentarian signals an intensification of law enforcement efforts to combat individuals who threaten Ukraine's national security.
Amid the ongoing war, ensuring accountability for those who continue to collaborate with the aggressor is a critical security imperative. This case forms part of a larger state strategy to identify and neutralize any form of support for the enemy, which carries serious consequences for both the country's security and economic stability.
