Extraordinary career
Jeff Lewis was born in Wales and later moved to London, where he began working at the Waldorf hotel and eventually became an apprentice jockey in Epsom.
He quickly established himself as a talented jockey, achieving numerous victories in Group 1 and classic races.
However, his memory will be primarily associated with victories on Mill Reef.
The year 1971, when they won the Derby, marked the pinnacle of their joint career.
Together they dominated the most important races, winning the Derby, Eclipse at Sandown, King George at Ascot, and Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
Colleagues' memories
Epsom trainer Simon Dow, who always admired Lewis, spoke about him:
“Jeff was ill for a short time and lived in a local nursing home. He passed away yesterday. I will remember him as an iconic figure for jockeys when I was a boy, as well as an exceptionally successful trainer.”
“It is unusual for a top jockey to become a very successful trainer. He achieved this, and I remember how he succeeded at the highest level, being a strict disciplinarian.”
“He was a legendary figure in Epsom throughout his life. I am sure he will be fondly remembered, and we want people to appreciate and celebrate all that he was: how cheerful he was and how successful.”
“He was a truly impressive personality from another generation who influenced many people.”
More details later.
