Mayor Terekhov named the population of Kharkiv on the 1000th day of the war.
Kharkiv: population size and changes due to the conflict
The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, reported the actual number of residents in the city, which turned out to be higher than the official figures. According to him, before 2022, 1.6 million people lived in Kharkiv, but in reality, the city had almost 2 million inhabitants. This is explained by the presence of many students, as well as people who came from other regions for work and lived in Kharkiv during the workweek.
Currently, the number of residents of Kharkiv is 1.2 million people. Some of them evacuated from the city due to the conflict, but many others came from occupied territories and areas where the war is ongoing. In particular, from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as from the Zaporizhzhia region. Many people also arrived from cities and districts of Kharkiv region, such as Kupiansk, Izium, Balakliia, and others.
Terekhov stated that currently, the number of residents is determined by mobile phone traffic. This data is significant for the proper functioning of all municipal services.
According to data from the UN Population Fund, Ukraine's population has decreased by 10 million people, which is about a quarter of the total population. This has resulted from the outflow of refugees, declining birth rates, and loss of life due to the war.
In addition, the city head pointed to the potential for a demographic crisis in Ukraine and Russia due to the loss of life and injury of over a million people as a result of military actions. Therefore, it was previously noted that to maintain Ukraine's population at 30 million, it is necessary to attract 300 thousand migrants annually.
