Legendary coach Miguel Ángel Russo has died: what happened to the Argentine specialist.
According to The Sun: Miguel Ángel Russo, a legend of Argentine football, passed away at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer.
GettyRusso was born in Buenos Aires in 1958 and spent his entire playing career at the club 'Estudiantes'.
From 1975 to 1988 he played over 400 matches for the club and won championships in 1982 and 1983.
After finishing his playing career in 1988, Russo became a coach, managing teams like 'Lanús', 'Estudiantes', 'Vélez Sarsfield', 'Rosario Central', and 'Boca Juniors'.
In 2007, he led 'Boca' to their last triumph in the Copa Libertadores, featuring stars like Juan Román Riquelme and Ever Banega.
Despite being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, Russo continued to work even when faced with complications.
Earlier this year he returned to 'Boca' for a third term, but at the end of September, he took medical leave.
The 'Boca' club confirmed his death on social media.
“Club Atlético Boca Juniors is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Miguel Ángel Russo. Miguel leaves an unforgettable mark on our institution and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and effort.”
“We support his family and loved ones during this moment of sorrow. Forever with us, dear Miguel.”
Russo's death caused a widespread reaction across South America, and many messages of mourning appeared.
The 'Vélez Sarsfield' club expressed its condolences: “With deep sorrow we announce the death of Miguel Ángel Russo. A true gentleman who knew how to honor his abilities as a coach, twice leading our team and guiding 'Fortín' to the 2005 title.”
The Argentine national team honored his memory with a minute of silence on the training field.
Russo will leave his mark through his son Ignacio, who currently plays as a forward for the club 'Tigre'.
