UN mission on enemy strike in Zaporizhzhia: Guided bombs have become one of the biggest threats to civilians.
UN Monitoring Mission: Russia has carried out the largest airstrikes in two years
According to the MMPUL, Russia has conducted airstrikes in Zaporizhzhia, which are the largest in terms of civilian casualties in the last two years.
During the airstrike, two aerial bombs struck an industrial facility in southern Zaporizhzhia, killing 13 civilians and injuring over a hundred people. This tragedy is the largest recorded by MMPUL since the shelling of a residential building in Dnipro a year ago.
MMPUL representatives visited the site of the airstrike, documenting the damage and interviewing victims and witnesses.
The head of MMPUL, Daniel Bell, emphasized that guided aerial bombs pose a serious threat to cities along the front line and are one of the main reasons for the increasing number of casualties among the civilian population. In 2024, the number of deaths and injuries increased by 30% compared to the previous year.
According to MMPUL, in 2024, 2,064 civilians were killed in Ukraine, and 9,089 were injured.
MMPUL indicates that the increase in casualties from airstrikes is a result of modifications that have expanded the area of effect. This allows aerial bombs to reach cities like Kharkiv, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia.
The mission first documented civilian casualties from guided aerial bombs in Kharkiv at the beginning of 2024, in Sumy and its region in August, and in Zaporizhzhia in September.
Since September 22, at least 35 civilians have been killed in Zaporizhzhia from airstrikes, and 308 have been injured. This number accounts for 78% of the total number of those affected by Russian shelling in the city.
