International Damage Registry Surpasses 100,000 Claims: Significance and Scope.
How the Damage Registry Operates
According to Novyny.live: Launched in 2023 for Ukraine, the International Damage Registry is now operational and actively receiving submissions. Its primary purpose is to collect and systematize claims for damages incurred since February 24, 2022. The fact that it has already received over 100,000 applications demonstrates significant public engagement and underscores the mechanism's necessity. This registry is a foundational tool for post-war recovery planning.
Registry Expands Its Scope
In December 2023, the registry broadened its eligibility, allowing not only individuals but also legal entities and state bodies to file claims. This expansion highlights the growing importance of formally documenting the extensive losses resulting from military actions, from private property to public infrastructure.
This is a clear signal that we are only at the beginning. To date, only about one-third of damage categories are open for claims, meaning a significant portion of business losses, state damages, and environmental harm is not yet fully accounted for.
Iryna Mudra, Deputy Head of the President's Office
The launch of this registry is a critical step for Ukraine's recovery process. By systematically cataloging losses, it creates an essential evidence base that can support appeals for international aid and future compensation from aggressor states. Such comprehensive documentation is vital for securing the financial resources needed for rebuilding.
The registry's ongoing evolution to include businesses and government agencies is key to achieving a full assessment of the war's impact, ensuring all affected parties have a pathway to record their losses.
