The IOC has increased the number of 3x3 basketball teams at the 2028 Olympics.
The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced an increase in the number of participating teams in the 3x3 basketball tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Instead of the previous 8 teams, there will now be 12 teams. Information regarding the competition format and qualification system will be announced later.
FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani expressed his gratitude to the IOC for this decision, noting that it reflects the global interest and enthusiasm for basketball at the Olympics. He also highlighted that Los Angeles is one of the most famous basketball cities in the world.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis also welcomed the decision to increase the number of teams, stating that it allows more national federations and players from around the world to dream about the Olympics.
Currently, the Netherlands are the men's 3x3 basketball champions, while Germany holds the title for women.
It has also become known that there will be more female athletes than male athletes at the 2028 Olympics. The total number of athletes will remain the same as at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Women will have 5333 spots, while men will have 5167. Additionally, the number of men's football teams will be reduced in favor of women's teams. There will be 16 teams in women's football, while men's football will have only 12.
The number of teams in women's water polo will also increase from 10 to 12, matching the number of men's teams. One more women's weight category will be added in boxing, just as there will be seven disciplines in the men's tournament.
