Australian volunteer killed in Donetsk a week before his wedding.
According to ТСН: The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is verifying information about the death of Australian Russell Allan Wilson, who participated in combat on the side of Ukraine against Russian aggression. According to social media and news sources, the volunteer was killed while carrying out a combat mission in the Donetsk region.
Russell Wilson, originally from Gosford (New South Wales), previously served in the Australian Army and joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2023. According to ABC, he was killed during his last mission to the front lines, just a week before his planned wedding.
Tributes and Support
A comrade of the deceased, a U.S. Army veteran, wrote on social media that Wilson was a person of exceptional courage who chose the path of fighting for freedom, even though he could have left the war zone. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs confirms its awareness of this tragedy and is providing consular assistance to Wilson's family. The Australian government once again urges citizens to avoid travel to Ukraine.
Aussies in Ukraine
Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, at least eight Australian citizens have been killed in combat. Currently, efforts are ongoing to secure the release of another Australian, former teacher Oscar Jenkins, who was initially thought to be dead but it later emerged that he is in Russian captivity. The Australian Ukrainian group is urging the government to intervene in this situation and include Jenkins in the next prisoner exchange lists.
It is also reminded that on December 27, the RDK reported the death of commander Denis Kapustin, who was killed in the Zaporizhzhia direction as a result of an FPV drone attack. However, it was revealed that Ukrainian intelligence staged his assassination, and the RDK commander is now ready to continue carrying out assigned tasks.
This tragic event highlights the difficult situation for Australians involved in the conflict in Ukraine. The number of Australian citizens killed and missing raises serious concerns, as most of them expressed a desire to help Ukraine in difficult times. The issue of protecting those who fall into captivity and bringing them home also remains important.
