Experts named the worst flooring for the kitchen: this material is damaged by water.
According to ТСН: The choice of flooring for the kitchen remains one of the most difficult decisions during renovations, as this space combines aesthetics with constant loads. The floor must withstand daily traffic, moisture, grease, and temperature fluctuations. Kitchen owners often make mistakes in choosing materials, and then regret it.
Problems with wooden flooring
According to designers and contractors, one of the most problematic options for the kitchen is wooden flooring. Although parquet and solid wood create a cozy atmosphere, they are not suitable for kitchen conditions. Specialists note that even small spills of water can lead to deformation of the boards, stains, and color changes.
“Wood is not intended for constant contact with moisture,” explains specialist Tim Oswald.
Even with proper care, the risk of damage remains high as it is difficult to avoid accidental spills in the kitchen. Wooden surfaces can be easily scratched, which is particularly noticeable in high-traffic areas.
Care requirements
“Even under such conditions, it is impossible to avoid the risk of water damage,” adds expert Jonathan Pelli.
If wooden flooring is already installed, it is important to follow additional measures: quality varnishing, regular maintenance, and immediate cleaning of spills. If action is not taken quickly, scratches from sand and dirt will appear over time.
Unsuccessful alternatives
Experts also draw attention to other materials that are not recommended for the kitchen. For example, porous natural stone, such as marble or travertine, looks impressive but is difficult to maintain on a daily basis. Designer Gina Valenti notes that such materials easily absorb grease and dirt.
Laminates are also considered a problematic option since, although their price is attractive, they respond poorly to moisture. “If water gets between the boards, the covering starts to bubble,” explains designer Thomas Borcherding.
Undesirable solutions
Carpets in the kitchen create cleaning difficulties and can promote mold growth, while mosaic tiles complicate cleaning due to the large amount of grout.
Recommendations
Experts recommend paying attention to waterproof luxury vinyl plank (LVP), which mimics the texture of wood but is better protected from moisture and mechanical damage. Using large-format porcelain tiles is also an excellent alternative, as they are easier to keep clean.
In the kitchen, the floor should be not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical for daily use, as neglecting this aspect can lead to disappointments after renovation.
In conclusion, it is important to remember that the kitchen is not just a place for cooking but also an area where families spend a lot of time. The right choice of flooring can significantly impact comfort and convenience in everyday life. Considering the advice of experts, kitchen owners can make a well-considered decision that meets their needs and lifestyle.Read also
