Dog trainer from the USA reveals a mistake in puppy training: why the word no doesn't work.
According to ТСН: A dog trainer from the USA advised dog owners to avoid using the word "no" during puppy training. She noted that such a form of prohibition not only fails to reinforce the desired behavior but can also complicate the learning process itself.
Training Tips
Kim Paciotti, a puppy training specialist, explains that young dogs, like children, actively explore their surroundings and constantly test the boundaries of what is allowed. If owners respond only with prohibitions or shouting, without offering alternatives, the animal does not understand what is considered proper behavior.
In her posts on Instagram, where more than 314,000 people follow Paciotti, she points out that frequent refusals can lead to a state of "learned helplessness." In this case, the puppy loses initiative and does not attempt to act, as it does not receive clear instructions on proper behavior.
Alternatives to Prohibitions
The trainer emphasizes that a prohibition only temporarily stops unwanted behavior. For example, if a puppy is chewing on shoes, a shout may scare it, but it will not teach that there are special toys for that. She recommends calmly stopping the action, gently getting the dog's attention with a soft voice, and offering a permitted alternative, followed by praise for the correct choice.
According to Paciotti, scientific research confirms that training methods based on punishment are inferior to alternative approaches. She advises establishing desired reactions in advance, training the puppy to sit during guest visits, go to its place when the doorbell rings, or walk alongside during a walk, for which it should be encouraged.
Focus on Learning
In conclusion, the dog trainer urges owners to focus on teaching desired behaviors instead of prohibitions.
By listening to these recommendations, dog owners can not only improve their interaction with their pets but also provide them with a better understanding of the surrounding world. By focusing on positive training methods, they can create a conducive environment for the development of their four-legged friend.
