‘Never going to say that ever again’ – Naomi Osaka slams Jelena Ostapenko as fiery US Open finger-pointing row erupts.
US Open Scandal: Ostapenko and Townsend at the Center of Controversy
According to The Sun: Naomi Osaka called Jelena Ostapenko 'horrible' after her insulting comments towards Taylor Townsend, noting:
“You shouldn’t say those things in the United States.”
Ostapenko denied accusations of racism, stating that Townsend, an African American, has 'classlessness' and 'lack of education' during a heated argument on the court.
GettyThe Latvian began criticizing Townsend after the match, as she was dissatisfied with her opponent's 'disrespectful' warm-up. She also called for Townsend to apologize for her accidental infraction during the match, which Ostapenko lost.

The situation sparked a fierce conflict but, fortunately, did not escalate into a physical fight. Townsend threatened Ostapenko with revenge when they meet again 'outside the US'.
At the post-match press conference, when asked by reporters about the possible racial undertones of her words, Townsend said:
“No, I don’t know – I can’t speak on what her intentions were.”
She also emphasized her pride as an African American, stating that such words have no basis:
“I’m very strong. I’m very proud as a black woman being out here representing myself and representing us and our culture.”
Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, posted on her social media:
“I was never racist in my life and I respect all nations of people in the world.”
She also noted that there are rules of conduct among players in tennis and expressed her discontent regarding Townsend's behavior.

Osaka on the Situation
Naomi Osaka, who defeated American Hailey Baptiste in this tournament, also commented on the incident, stating that such words should not have been spoken, especially in the context of racial relations in the US:
“I think obviously it’s one of the worst things you can say to a black tennis player in a majority white sport.”
Osaka emphasized that she knows how hard Townsend worked and assured that there is nothing in her that could be linked to a lack of education. She added:
“I think it’s ill timing and the worst person you could have ever said it to.”The resolution of the conflict between Ostapenko and Townsend still looks uncertain. Despite both tennis players expressing their thoughts and grievances towards each other, it is important that the situation does not hinder their sporting careers. Such emotional outbursts in the world of professional sports often raise questions about the perception of race and respect among athletes.
