Odesa Honors Fallen Police Officers with Memorial Tournament After Missile Strike.
Memorial Tournament for Fallen Police Officers Held in Odesa
According to Novyny.live: In the wake of a devastating missile attack on March 15, 2024, that claimed 21 lives, Odesa hosted a commemorative tournament to honor the memory of fallen police officers. Among the deceased were Police Colonel Oleksandr Hostishchev, the first commander of the 'Tsunami' assault regiment, and Deputy Colonel Dmytro Abramenko. The event was designed to immortalize the sacrifice of those who perished that day, with a special focus on Hostishchev and all officers who lost their lives in the strike.
Competition and Its Significance
The tournament brought together military personnel, law enforcement officers, and cadets, who competed in six shooting exercises and twelve physical challenges. Police Lieutenant Colonel Maksym Tsurkan emphasized the event's purpose, stating:
“As a special forces unit carrying out combat missions on the front lines of the war against the occupiers, this shooting tournament is a way to immortalize the memory of our brothers-in-arms who gave the most precious thing—their lives on the frontline.”
International category judge Andriy Konko noted that such competitions have been held since 2019.
“Abroad, this is more of a civilian format, but we adapted it to full combat gear to simulate real conditions as closely as possible,”he explained. This tournament serves as a vital event that not only honors the fallen but also enhances participants' combat readiness. The legacy endures, as these competitions continue the tradition of celebrating the heroism and bravery of Ukraine's defenders.
This tournament underscores the importance of remembering the fallen and maintaining morale among military and law enforcement personnel amid the ongoing conflict. It also provides a platform for participants to refine skills that are critical in today's war environment, where readiness for real combat situations is paramount. Such initiatives not only pay tribute to the deceased but also bolster the fighting spirit and professionalism of those still serving.
