Usyk Makes a Friendly Appearance on the Football Pitch
According to Novyny.live: World heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk made a surprise appearance in a friendly football match for the Ukrainian club FC Polissya. The 39-year-old athlete entered the game in the 75th minute as a substitute, joining the action with Polissya already leading 2-0. The event took place in Marbella, Spain, where the team is conducting its mid-season training camp ahead of the league's resumption.
Facing MLS Opposition and a German Legend
Polissya's opponent for the friendly was the Canadian MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Adding further star power to the match, German football icon Thomas Müller also featured, playing for the Vancouver side. This marked Usyk's first appearance for Polissya since February 2022, making him the oldest player on the pitch during his stint. Such cross-sport appearances are rare for active champions at his level.
The event highlights Usyk's passion for sports beyond the boxing ring and his ongoing support for Polissya. The involvement of globally recognized athletes like Usyk and Müller brings significant attention to Ukrainian football, potentially boosting its profile and aiding the development of the country's sporting culture during a challenging period.
