In the pursuit format, athletes start based on their finishing times from a previous sprint race, which explains their initial positions. Mandzin began the race from the 24th starting position, while Pidruchnyi started from 27th.
During the first shooting stage, both Ukrainian athletes missed one target each. After the second shooting stage, Dmytro Pidruchnyi managed to climb to 18th place, improving his standing on the course. At the finish line, Vitalii Mandzin placed 16th with a time deficit of 2:44.1, and Dmytro Pidruchnyi finished 20th, 3:01.3 behind the winner.

The Olympic gold medal in the event was won by Sweden's Martin Ponsiluoma, who posted a time of 31:11.9 with just one shooting penalty (0+1+0+0). The silver medal went to Norway's Sturla Holm Lægreid, who finished 20.6 seconds behind, and the bronze was claimed by France's Émilien Jacquelin, who trailed the winner by 29.7 seconds.
