Why Olympic medalist Rizatdinova turned down a top job in Spain to return to Ukraine.
Hanna Rizatdinova: choosing Ukraine over Spain
According to Novyny.live: Hanna Rizatdinova, an Olympic medalist in rhythmic gymnastics, has revealed she declined a major professional opportunity in Spain after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While abroad, she received an offer to lead rhythmic gymnastics in Catalonia, effectively becoming its president and head coach. Despite the prestige, she chose to come back to Ukraine, where she now runs her own rhythmic gymnastics academy.
Reflecting on the Spanish offer
Rizatdinova shared her thoughts on the proposals she received during her time in Spain.
“I was invited for masterclasses, and they even offered me a position — to be president and head coach of Catalonia. It’s a very serious offer,” she said.Yet, despite the opportunity, she realized she would struggle to connect with local children.
“I didn’t understand how I would communicate with local kids, how to get my ideas across,” Rizatdinova explained.
Returning to Ukraine was a pivotal decision for her, given the country’s strong traditions and ongoing popularity of rhythmic gymnastics. Rizatdinova emphasized that she wanted to avoid the same difficulties she had experienced when working with children.
“What I lacked, I wanted to prevent in my work with children,” she added.By staying in Ukraine, she continues to contribute to the sport and support the next generation of athletes.
Rizatdinova’s choice highlights not only the importance of sustaining national sports during wartime but also a deep commitment to preserving cultural and athletic heritage. Her decision reflects a strong bond with her homeland and a dedication to helping young gymnasts reach their full potential. It may also serve as an example for other Ukrainian athletes facing similar crossroads amid external challenges.
