Modern Pentathlon in the Olympic Games: horseback riding replaced with obstacle course.
According to The Sun: One of the oldest sports competitions in the Olympic Games has undergone a radical transformation this year – now, the attempts include challenges akin to those faced by ninja warriors.
Modern Pentathlon, which has been part of the summer games since their inception by the founder, has been included in the Olympic program since 1912 in Stockholm.
However, equestrianism has been excluded from Modern Pentathlon at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. Now, athletes will instead undertake an obstacle course, a concept borrowed from the TV show 'Ninja Warrior.'
Pentathletes will randomly navigate challenges over various obstacles, including wheels, hoops, barriers, stairs, beams, and crenels.
The competition will be fast-paced and intense, a race against the clock, but each participant must clear all obstacles within the designated corridor without touching the ground outside of it.
The course length is 70 meters and consists of eight obstacles, six of which are fixed, while two are determined the day before the qualifiers and semifinals.
Traditionalists may not be pleased with the changes, however, UK pentathlete and 2020 Olympic champion Joe Choong has stated he would drop out of the sport if horseback riding is removed.
Notably, one of Britain's standout athletes, Emma Whitaker, supports these changes and believes they will add excitement to Pentathlon in the future.
Thus, at this year's Olympic Games, new ninja warrior-style obstacle challenges are being introduced in Modern Pentathlon, aimed at breaking up traditions and adding an element of risk and complexity to the competition, although not all athletes support these changes.
