Six rules for transplanting orchids: how to avoid mistakes and not lose flowering.
According to ТСН: Orchids are considered quite capricious plants, so improper transplantation can slow their growth and even delay flowering. Horticulture specialists recommend adhering to a few simple guidelines to help the plants better survive the change of pots and recover faster.
Proper Transplantation
Before transplanting an orchid, it should be carefully removed from the container. The roots often adhere to the sides of the pot, so experts recommend using a flat blunt object to gently detach the root ball without damage.
Time for Transplantation
It is not advisable to transplant an orchid during flowering. As florists note, it is better to wait until the flowers fall off if the plant shows no signs of disease. Only brown or soft roots should be cut, avoiding healthy green areas.
Drainage and Soil
Particular attention should be paid to drainage. Orchids do not do well in regular soil; it is better to use a special mixture based on bark and choose a pot with sufficient drainage holes, as the roots need to 'breathe'. The upper part of the roots should not be buried.
Transplanting as Needed
Transplanting an orchid should not be done on a schedule. It should only be transplanted when the roots become too cramped or the substrate starts to decompose. Healthy roots remain firm and should be green or silvery in color.
Pot Size
The size of the pot should not be increased dramatically. Orchids prefer to live in a compact space, so the new container should only be one size larger than the previous one.
Delicacy in Handling
The last but no less important piece of advice is caution. Orchids are sensitive to mechanical damage, so gentle handling and good air access to the roots help avoid stress and rot.
Dark rooms, bathrooms, or windowless offices are not a death sentence for orchids. Many species adapt well to low light conditions and do not require frequent watering, making them an excellent choice for such environments.
