Such a masterpiece: Shevchenko recalled the legendary goal against Russia.
Andriy Shevchenko talked about his bright goal against Russia
Ukrainian footballer and coach Andriy Shevchenko recalled the unforgettable moment when he scored a goal against the Russian team. He spoke about it in an interview for the YouTube channel of Zhenya Yanovych.
«Scoring against Russia and winning. All those films made about it did not show the tension of that moment. Safety... We were told that we could not stay in a hotel. We were always at the embassy and there was a lot of security. When we went to the stadium, everything flew at the bus: including bottles... But honestly, I didn’t care. I knew that this moment was important for us, that we needed to prepare, and I knew we wouldn’t lose this game», – Shevchenko said.
He explained that Ukraine was losing, but there were still 4 minutes left in the match.
«I run up to the ball. And it was right near the bench. Yozhef Sabo said: «Son, son, please go to the penalty area». And I said: «Everything will be fine, I will score now. Don’t worry». Such a masterpiece», – he added.
Andriy Shevchenko also noted that he did not know exactly that he would score, but he believed in his abilities.
In 1999, in the last round of qualification for the European Championship, the Ukrainian national team faced Russia. A few minutes before the end of the match, Russia was leading 1:0 and with a victory, they would qualify for Euro 2000. But Shevchenko's goal stopped Russia and gave Ukraine hope for a chance to qualify for the European Championship.
It is worth noting that the president of the Ukrainian Football Association, Andriy Shevchenko, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame of Italian football.
