Penny Lancaster on the Conflict with Michelle Mone: It Was Despicable and Cruel.
Conflict Between Penny Lancaster and Michelle Mone is in Focus Again
According to The Sun: Penny Lancaster has revisited her dispute with former lingerie queen Michelle Mone, calling her 'vengeful and greedy'.
Alan MacGregor Ewing - The Sun GlasgowThe 54-year-old Lancaster was fired from Mone's failed company Ultimo in 2004, just two years into their collaboration.
The 53-year-old Mone replaced her with Rachel Hunter, the ex-wife of Lancaster's husband, Sir Rod Stewart.
The original dispute became known as the 'bra war'. Stewart, who was never one to hold back, called Mone 'shabby' and claimed she needed to 'be put in her place'.
Lancaster's New Book Reveals Details
After two decades, Lancaster shared her thoughts on her rival again in her new book Someone Like Me, claiming that Mone's decision was motivated by 'greed' and 'revenge'.
“I found it despicable and like a window into Mone's true nature. The answer was simple: headlines, of course. The contrast between Rod Stewart's ex-wife and Stewart's current partner would generate more headlines than any advertising campaign. In my opinion, it was cynical and disgusting.”
Lancaster accuses Mone of greed, asserting that Mone is currently under investigation by the government for alleged improper provision of medical equipment during COVID along with her husband, billionaire Doug Barrowman.
Shutterstock EditorialStewart and Hunter married in 1990 but later separated, finalizing the process in 2006, seven years after Stewart began dating Lancaster.
Lancaster noted that when Mone initially proposed a collaboration, she was unfamiliar with Ultimo, but the project appealed to her.
Financial Troubles and Divorce
Lancaster claims that the brand was in financial trouble “on the brink of bankruptcy” and couldn't pay her fees.
She insists her contract was significantly less than the alleged £200,000, and that Mone later told her she and her husband had to mortgage their house to raise funds for signing the contract.
Lancaster signed the contract in hopes of a successful business partnership, and during their collaboration, they grew close.
But that closeness did not last long: Lancaster learned of her firing through the press, despite discussions of a contract extension.
A spokesperson for Mone denied all allegations, stating that Ultimo was not in financial distress at the time of the contract's signing.
“We do not recall any insolvency threats at Ultimo. Like many growing companies, we had challenges, but Michelle successfully turned the business into a major international brand.”
The spokesperson added that the decision to replace Lancaster with Hunter was a response to new demands during the collaboration with major retailers.
Lancaster had previously criticized Mone earlier this year on the show Loose Women.
PPE Scandal and Government Investigation
Discussing the PPE scandal, the label associated with the businesswoman and her husband Barrowman secured a contract worth £80 million for the supply of masks and another £120 million for gowns that turned out to be unsuitable for use.
The government announced it would sue in the High Court for £122 million plus costs to reclaim the invested funds.
So far, no charges have been brought against PPE Medpro, Mone, or Barrowman, and all parties deny any wrongdoing.
“I was not surprised because karma always comes back, but I am ready to talk about the details only under the right circumstances, and at the moment I have put that behind me.”
Thus, the conflict between Lancaster and Mone has garnered attention again, as new details emerge in Lancaster's book hinting at her past troubles. Meanwhile, questions remain about the PPE scandal and the investigation regarding Mone and her business's future.
