January Pruning of Climbing Roses: The Secret to Luxuriant Blooming in Summer.
Garden Work in January
According to ТСН: January may seem unsuitable for gardening work, but it is precisely at this time that the foundation for future blooming is laid. Experts remind us that even climbing roses, which are currently in a dormant state, need attention so that they can please us with abundant flowers in spring and summer.
Pruning Climbing Roses
Horticulture specialist Paul Parker from J. Parker’s notes that winter pruning is key to forming a healthy and robust plant. He recommends carefully trimming the climbing rose in January, as this will help it achieve the desired shape and ensure abundant summer blooming. It is important not to prune the plant during the first two years after planting to allow it to establish well.
First, it is necessary to remove all damaged or dry branches, and then tie young shoots to existing supports. Lateral shoots should be shortened by approximately two-thirds. Main stems should be secured to a trellis or other structure to direct their growth. If the bush is too dense, it is better to cut old branches at the base, as this promotes the appearance of new shoots in spring.
Consequences of Skipping Pruning
Experts from Gardeners World emphasize that if winter pruning is skipped, a gardener risks ending up with a chaotic bush with weak shoots that form buds poorly. Crossed stems can lead to the spread of fungal infections and the death of part of the crown.
It is also important to remember that winter feeding of geraniums helps lay strong buds and activates their growth, allowing the plant to bloom much earlier and more abundantly.
Gardeners need to remember that proper care for plants during the winter months lays the groundwork for their flowering in the coming seasons. Successful summer gardening can arise thanks to the attention and effort invested in winter preparation.
