European Intelligence Agencies Report Trump's Peace Plan Has Failed, Citing Russia's True Aims.
Trump's Peace Plan Deemed a Failure
According to TSN.ua: According to assessments from European intelligence chiefs, Donald Trump's plan for a swift end to the war in Ukraine has failed. They conclude that Russia is not genuinely seeking peace but is instead using negotiations to advance its own strategic objectives. The lack of progress in talks indicates Moscow remains committed to its unchanged, long-term goals.
Geneva Talks Yield No Breakthrough
A third round of negotiations concluded in Geneva in 2026, producing no significant breakthrough. The talks, led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, aim to find a resolution to the conflict. However, intelligence observations suggest Russia is attempting to split discussions into formal and back-channel tracks, a tactic viewed as an effort to manipulate the process.
Discussions have also included proposals for bilateral cooperation worth up to $12 trillion, highlighting the significant economic dimension of the negotiations. Despite these talks, overall progress remains in doubt. As one intelligence chief stated:
“Russia is not pursuing peace. They are pursuing their strategic goals, which remain unchanged: the removal of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the transformation of Ukraine into a 'neutral' buffer state.”
Russia's domestic economic situation adds another layer of complexity, with interest rates at 15.5%, potentially affecting its capacity to sustain military operations and negotiate. This context is crucial for understanding the pressures on the Kremlin. Consequently, the situation remains tense, and the future of the Geneva talks appears uncertain.
These developments underscore the intricate nature of international diplomacy and how geopolitical strategies impact peace processes. The stalled negotiations suggest the conflict may persist as long as core positions remain irreconcilable. While economic factors like Russia's high interest rates could introduce complications, the Kremlin's strategic ambitions continue to take precedence.
