Zelensky's fears come true: Bloomberg considers whether Ukraine will have to concede territory to Russia.
Ukraine faces the threat of losing territory due to Russia's decisions
According to Bloomberg, Ukraine will have to lose territory that Russia began to seize in 2014. The publication notes that before President Zelensky's arrival at the Munich Security Conference, Ukraine's fate was almost decided. President Trump, in a conversation with Putin, stated that 'Ukraine could one day become Russian,' which confirms the growing sense of anxiety.
'Zelensky was informed as if in passing. His worst fears - that the terms of a peace settlement are being agreed upon behind his back - were coming true. His proposals regarding Ukraine's critically important natural resources in exchange for protection did not hold much weight.' - Bloomberg
According to the article, Ukraine's NATO membership and the presence of American troops in the country are becoming unlikely. Ukraine will have to concede the territories that have already been seized by Russia since 2014. The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury supports Ukraine with an economic agreement, but this does not provide adequate protection.
The article also mentions the irony of the events taking place in Munich. Here, in 1938, Western powers attempted to contain Nazi aggression, but agreed to Germany's annexation of part of Czechoslovakia. There is a fear that Putin will continue to test the strength of NATO's eastern flank. Critics believe that Europe is to blame for relying on endless protection from the U.S.
Ukraine has been in a state of war since 2022, but the future of its military leader is in question. Trump noted that President Zelensky has low popularity and needs to hold elections. This would please Putin.
President Trump reported on a 'long and productive' conversation with Putin, as well as a planned call with Zelensky.
