Macron and Trump's Meeting: Uncertainty Regarding Ukraine's Security

French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. leader Donald Trump did not reach an agreement on ensuring Ukraine's security, Politico reports. During his visit to the White House, Macron did not achieve significant results in negotiations with Trump, raising concerns among European partners.

Macron stated that Trump did not provide any clear promises regarding a security mechanism for Ukraine. Thus, strategic uncertainty on this issue remains, said a EU diplomat.

According to the publication, European capitals, particularly Paris and London, are trying to organize a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if an agreement is reached between the U.S. and Russia regarding the cessation of the war.

Security guarantees for Ukraine are an important issue that could help prevent a new Russian offensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson are set to travel to Washington to demand military guarantees from the U.S. However, Trump stated that the U.S. would not participate, but European countries are still hoping for their support.

After the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump did not provide a clear answer to the question of the guarantees the U.S. could provide, although an important agreement regarding the supply of raw materials between them is planned to be signed. Zelensky is in Washington this week.

I am not going to give too many security guarantees. We will make Europe do it because... Europe is their closest neighbor, but we will make it so that everything goes well, Trump stated.

Despite the Trump administration's clear statement regarding the non-participation of American troops, European countries are still hoping for U.S. support, which could include intelligence, air defense, and military transport.

It was a waste of Time, emphasized a EU representative who participated in the meeting.

Recall that Trump's confirmation of Zelensky's visit to the U.S. was made on February 28.
