Michael Johnson Will Not Commentate on World Athletics Championships: What Happened.
Michael Johnson will not appear on BBC programs during the World Athletics Championships
According to The Sun: Former Olympic champion Michael Johnson will be absent from the BBC broadcasts of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month. The 57-year-old athlete has regularly appeared as a BBC athletics expert for the past two decades.
The four-time Olympic champion joined the BBC team in 2001. However, he will not be seen on screens in September due to a financial crisis at Grand Slam Track, his new athletics league. Grand Slam Track, which launched this year, has failed to pay some of its athletes on time.
Johnson promised significant cash rewards for participating athletes before the event opened in April. However, after the first round in Jamaica, the absence of spectators and significant profitability from broadcasts and sponsorship deals led to a huge funding loss. Johnson said: 'We promised that athletes would be paid fairly and promptly. But here we are in a difficult situation with the ability to reward them.'
The Times confirmed this week that Johnson will not appear on BBC during the championship broadcasts. A BBC spokesperson did not provide any explanations for his absence. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Johnson stated: 'Unfortunately, he has other commitments but looks forward to working with BBC in the future.'
Before the Grand Slam Track tournament started, athletes were promised money just for participating in each event. They were also promised around £74,000 ($100,000) for winning their events at all four meetings. This was to come from a starting fund of over £8.8 million ($12 million).
Michael Johnson will not appear on BBC programs during the World Athletics Championships due to financial issues in the new athletics league Grand Slam Track, which has failed to pay athletes on time. The promised cash rewards for participation and victories will not be received by the athletes due to the funding loss that occurred after the league's first competition.
