According to Novyny.live: The European Union is not currently considering any changes to the rules that would require the return of military-age Ukrainian men from EU countries. The existing Temporary Protection Directive, which grants them legal status, will remain in force until March 2027. This was confirmed by European Commission spokesperson Markus Lamer, who stated:

“I am not aware of any debates in Luxembourg. I can say that temporary protection is what we decided at EU level and at the level of the member states until 2027.”

Since March 2022, the EU has granted temporary protection to over 4 million Ukrainians fleeing the war. This mechanism allows Ukrainians who left their country due to the conflict to receive essential support and legal protection within the EU. The status is set to expire on March 4, 2027, providing long-term stability for those displaced.

Financial Support and Emerging Concerns

Luxembourg, for instance, has spent over 400 million euros on aid to Ukraine and plans to invest another 100 million euros this year. However, as noted by Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Yuriko Backes, the arrival of more military-age men presents a dilemma:

“Initially there were many women and children. In recent weeks and months we have seen that more men are also arriving. And I think that is actually a certain problem if, on the one hand, we provide military support so that Ukrainians can defend themselves, and at the same time young men are coming to us.”

While these men are legally entitled to remain in the EU under the current rules, the question of their potential return remains a sensitive political issue.
