Swedish Police: Premier League Players Fixed Matches.
Premier League Footballers May Be Involved in Match-Fixing
According to The Sun: Fredrik Gardare, head of the Swedish police combating organized crime in sports, accused Premier League players of fixing matches. He made this sensational statement, citing evidence obtained during a raid on a casino.
The Football Association of Great Britain is considering initiating an investigation based on these accusations. However, according to the Daily Mail, the Association has not yet received the results of the investigation from the Swedish police.
“There were more than one Premier League player (involved). Betting on yellow cards, corners, and other aspects of matches,” said Inspector Gardare.
He also emphasized: “This is important for both Swedish football and football in many countries. It's crucial for England and international football to stop match-fixing.”
Gardare's Experience and Next Steps
Gardare has already worked on major cases, including the investigation into former Manchester City player Dixon Etuhu, who attempted to bribe for match-fixing in Sweden. Etuhu was found guilty and received a five-year ban in Sweden.
Gardare's latest investigation led to a raid on an illegal casino in 2021, during which several phones were confiscated. Reportedly, one of the players had evidence of match-fixing in various European leagues and even on an international level in Telegram.
“There are several Premier League stars who are part of the evidence,” claimed the Swedish investigator.
Despite having serious evidence, the Swedish police decided not to continue the investigation. Gardare urged the authorities to address the unanswered questions and noted that the seized phones containing important evidence are still with the police.
“This phone is either with the Stockholm police or with the national police,” he stated.
Gardare also mentioned that the investigation became a priority, but the police decided to close it in December of the same year.
The Sun has reached out to the Premier League for comment.
