The presence of IAEA inspectors at key substations for nuclear power plants may deter RF from attacks - expert.

Russia may be deterred from attacking nuclear facilities due to the decision to extend IAEA monitoring missions to main substations that affect the operation of nuclear power plants. This was stated by the Director of Energy Programs at the 'Razumkov Center,' Volodymyr Omelchenko. According to him, this may serve as a deterrent to enemy attacks on nuclear power plants and transmission system operator substations.

Nuclear generation is the basis of Ukraine's energy system and accounts for about 60% of all capacities in the country. A significant power deficit and the impossibility of the economy and energy sector existing without nuclear power plants, the expert noted.

According to the agreement with the IAEA, the agency’s monitoring missions will be extended to key main substations, attacks on which are Russia's target to affect the operation of Ukrainian NPPs. Earlier, Ukraine's intention to complete the construction of two units at the Khmelnytsky NPP received support from the USA, the EU, and the IAEA.
