Why Russia's Renewed Push in Sumy Oblast Is Doomed to Fail.
Russian Military Activity Intensifies in Sumy Oblast
According to UATV: Ukrainian Volunteer Army spokesperson Serhiy Bratčuk has reported a surge in Russian military activity along the border zone of Sumy Oblast. He emphasized, however, that these efforts will not yield any long-term strategic success. According to Bratčuk, Russian forces, including the 'Sever' (North) group, are demonstrating increased aggression, but their actions remain ineffective across a broad front.
On March 11, 2023, reports confirmed a significant escalation in shelling against Ukrainian military positions and settlements. Specifically, 127 artillery strikes were recorded over the previous day on the North-Slobozhansky and Kursk directions. Bratčuk noted that in the summer of 2022, Russian forces had already attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses in the Sumy direction, but their advance was halted by Ukrainian troops.
“They were advancing very actively at that time, approaching the regional center (Sumy). They probably planned a blitzkrieg. But our troops managed to stop the advance of the Russian 'Sever' troop grouping and push them back,” stated Serhiy Bratčuk.
He added that currently, Russian troops are primarily 'entering the gray zone, where there is no physical presence of our forces.' This indicates that the Russian army's activity is not producing meaningful results. Sumy Oblast, which borders Russia's Bryansk and Kursk regions, has been a frequent target of cross-border attacks since the initial invasion.
Bratčuk stressed that 'therefore, they are simply incapable of advancing and attacking on a wide front on the North-Slobozhansky direction,' highlighting the limited capacity of Russian forces to execute large-scale offensive operations. Thus, while Russian military activity in the Sumy border area has increased, experts believe their actions are unlikely to lead to significant changes on the frontline.
The State of Ukrainian Forces
The rise in Russian military activity along the Sumy border underscores ongoing tensions in the region. However, according to assessments by Ukrainian military experts, these efforts lack strategic success. Such actions may point to Russian attempts to divert Ukrainian attention or test their readiness to repel assaults. The frontline situation remains tense, yet Ukrainian forces continue to maintain control over key positions, which significantly reduces the likelihood of a successful Russian advance in this direction. This defensive posture has been a consistent feature of Ukraine's strategy to secure its northern border.
