Russia's Fake Call Plot Against Hungary's Minority in Ukraine Exposed by Kyiv.
Kyiv Uncovers Russian Psychological Operation
According to UATV: On March 18, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) announced it had dismantled a Russian information-psychological special operation designed to destabilize the Transcarpathia region and escalate tensions between Ukraine and Hungary. The scheme involved criminals using IP-telephony to spoof caller IDs, making it appear as though threats were coming from inside Ukraine.
The perpetrators, operating from Russian territory, placed calls to members of the Hungarian ethnic community. During these conversations, the callers impersonated members of so-called 'national-patriotic groups' and even Ukrainian law enforcement officers. They demanded that Hungarians leave Ukraine, threatening physical violence and other reprisals if they refused.
Threats to National Minority Security
The SBU highlighted that these actions are part of a broader Russian strategy to destabilize regions where national minorities live. Such threats directly endanger the safety and peaceful coexistence of communities within Ukraine.
This incident underscores the critical need for robust information security monitoring in Ukraine, particularly concerning interethnic relations. Exposing these operations helps prevent conflict escalation and ensures stability in areas with national minorities. The response of Ukrainian authorities to these threats is vital for maintaining social peace and security across the country.
