Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodia: ceasefire agreement violated

According to ТСН: The Thai Army carried out airstrikes along the disputed border with Cambodia after both countries began accusing each other of violating a ceasefire agreement mediated by the U.S. president.

The Thai army reported new clashes in the eastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, resulting in the death of one soldier and four others wounded due to shelling from Cambodia.

"The Thai side began using aircraft to strike military targets in several areas," the statement said.

The Cambodian Ministry of Defense confirmed that after several days of provocations, the Thai army attacked its units in two areas, but Cambodian forces did not return fire.

Response from the Prime Minister of Thailand

In light of the escalating situation at the border, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul held an emergency meeting with security chiefs.

The Cambodian side has yet to comment on the situation. Thai authorities previously reported that as a result of the fighting at the border, 12 people, mostly civilians, were killed on July 24.

This is another stage in the long-standing territorial dispute between the countries that has lasted for over a century. Tensions escalated in 2008 when Cambodia attempted to include an ancient temple on the UNESCO World Heritage List, provoking a sharp protest from Thailand.

The situation intensified in May this year after the death of a Cambodian soldier, which became the trigger for the deepest crisis in bilateral relations in the last ten years.

This escalation of conflict highlights the long-standing tension in the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. The situation raises concerns not only in the region but also at the international level, as both countries may need support to avoid further escalations and restore peaceful dialogue.
