Generous Evening on December 31: the main traditions and fortune-telling for the future

According to ТСН: The Generous Evening, celebrated on December 31, is one of the merriest winter holidays. This holiday combines pagan rituals and Christian traditions, symbolizing a night of transition, renewal, abundance, and fertility.

Since ancient times, Ukrainians believed that how they spent the Generous Evening would determine the entire next year. Therefore, laughter, music, songs, and generosity filled the home.

For dinner, the hostess prepared a wealthy table with a variety of dishes, unlike the lean and restrained dinner on Christmas. Traditional dishes included kutya, various meat dishes, sausages, dumplings, pancakes, and doughnuts. The table symbolized abundance in the new year.

On this evening, the doors were not closed, as it was believed that the more guests in the house, the more good would come. Hosts welcomed singers, neighbors, relatives, and children—everyone was invited to the table, and it was customary not to refuse treats.

Caroling and Malanka

The main tradition of this holiday is caroling. Girls and boys visited homes, performing carols, praising the hosts, and wishing them a good harvest, health, and prosperity. In return, they received treats.

A feature of Malanka was humorous dressing up:

  • the goat — a symbol of fertility and life;

  • Malanka — a cheerful girl;

  • Vasyl — the young master of the new year;

  • Grandpa and Grandma — images of abundance and wisdom.

They led the “Goat,” which had to “die and be resurrected” so that everything in the house was restored and multiplied. This ritual signifies the victory of life over winter and poverty.

Fortune-Telling

On this night, girls foretold the future, marriage, and happiness in the new year. This night was considered the “night of open roads,” when wishes are fulfilled.

For example, unmarried girls placed four kings from a deck of cards under their pillow to see their fiancé in a dream. They also placed a comb under their pillow and whispered before going to sleep:

“Betrothed one, comb my hair!”
Whoever appears in the dream would be the one they'd marry.

Thus, the Generous Evening is filled with traditions and rituals that are deeply connected to the culture and religious beliefs of the Ukrainian people.

Today, the Generous Evening remains an important part of Ukrainian cultural heritage. It not only marks the end of the year but also gives people the opportunity to gather together, celebrate achievements, and dream of a better future. These traditions live in the hearts of Ukrainians, passing values from generation to generation.
