Ukraine calls on NATO to provide an official invitation
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga urged NATO member countries to grant Ukraine an official invitation to Alliance meetings in Brussels. He emphasized the need to accelerate Ukraine's NATO membership process as an important element in the strategy to counter Russian aggression.
President Volodymyr Zelensky proposes a unique approach to membership in the Alliance, which involves granting membership to that part of Ukraine which is under government control. He believes this will help stop the active phase of hostilities.
'An invitation should not be seen as an escalation. On the contrary, the realization of Ukraine's inevitable membership in NATO will deprive Russia of one of the main arguments for continuing the war,' Sibiga emphasized.
At present, there is no consensus among NATO members regarding an immediate invitation to Ukraine. Any decision requires the agreement of all 32 member countries of the Alliance.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina noted that the main goal of the letter is to send a strong political signal to Trump about continuing the course towards NATO membership.
The letter paid special attention to Russia's actions, particularly the involvement of North Korean troops and using Ukraine to test new weapons.
Additionally, a change in US foreign policy under the future administration of President Donald Trump is expected, which may affect the Alliance's position.
