Szijjarto criticizes Borrell's proposal for weapons for Ukraine.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, has criticized the vulnerable relationship of the head of European diplomacy to lifting restrictions on the use of Western weapons by Ukraine and sanctions against Israeli ministers.
Arriving at the European Council building in Brussels, Josep Borrell called for lifting restrictions on the use of the weapons provided to Ukraine to strike targets in Russia.
The arms we provide to Ukraine should be used to the fullest, and restrictions should be lifted so that Ukrainians can strike back at the places where Russia is bombing them. Otherwise, this weapon is pointless.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has also called on EU ministers to allow Ukraine to strike targets in Russia, stating that this proposal should not be seen as an escalation.
Borrell's and Kuleba's proposal was supported by France, Sweden, Latvia, the Netherlands, and Poland, who noted that international law does not prohibit a country from defending itself against an aggressor.
Hungary was against such proposals and also received criticism from Lithuania and Germany for expanding its soft immigration program for Russians and Belarusians.
Szijjarto defended the program, emphasizing that there are far fewer Russians living in Hungary than in other EU countries.
Relations between Hungary and the EU deteriorated after Budapest took over the presidency of the EU Council on a rotating basis.
When asked why the meeting took place in Brussels, Borrell replied, 'Because I decided that way.'
