The previous coach, Michal Probierz, left his position after losing to Finland and a conflict with forward Robert Lewandowski. Currently, Cherchesov has experience working with the national team of Kazakhstan. The coach has faced criticism for the lack of effectiveness of his team and refusal to learn the local language, which caused a negative reaction from the Football Federation of Kazakhstan.

The Ukrainian national football team won against the team of New Zealand in the framework of the Canadian Shield. Goals from Oleksiy Hutsulyak and Oleksandr Zinchenko secured a victory for the Ukrainian team with a score of 2:1.
