Knowing one simple trick and adhering to the correct cooking time, barley becomes soft, rich, and tasty even without sauce and meat.
How long to actually cook barley
The classic mistake is to throw dry barley straight into the pot and boil it for hours. The correct approach begins long before turning on the stove. The grain must be soaked for 8 hours, or better yet, overnight. This significantly reduces the cooking time and makes the grains tender.
After soaking, rinse the barley and cover it with water in a 1:3 ratio. It should be cooked for 35-40 minutes on low heat with the lid on. During this time, the grains fully open but do not overcook.

To make barley tasty without meat, at the end of cooking, add a teaspoon of vegetable oil or a piece of butter, along with a pinch of sugar. This trick highlights the natural nutty flavor of the grain and makes it richer.
