Slovakia Halts Emergency Power Supply to Ukraine, According to Ukrenergo.
Slovakia Cuts Off Emergency Electricity Supplies
According to Novyny.live: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced an end to emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. However, Ukraine's national energy company, Ukrenergo, states it has not received any official documentation confirming a unilateral termination of the contract. Ukrenergo is confident this decision will not impact the stability of Ukraine's power grid.
Ukrenergo noted that the last request for emergency assistance from Slovakia was made over a month ago. The company also emphasized that emergency aid from the Slovak direction has been infrequent for Ukraine's unified energy system. As of February 23, 2026, Ukrenergo received a letter from the Slovak transmission system operator (SEPS) outlining details for potential electricity provision.
Hungary's Stance and Ukraine's Response
Hungary has expressed support for Slovakia's move to stop the power supply. In response, Andrii Sybiha, a Ukrainian representative, stated that Kyiv rejects and condemns the ultimatums from Slovakia and Hungary, asserting:
"Kyiv rejects and condemns these ultimatums." - Andrii Sybiha
Currently, a contract for mutual emergency assistance remains in effect between Ukrenergo and SEPS, indicating that operational cooperation between the two countries continues. This situation highlights ongoing regional tensions concerning energy security, particularly since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has made energy independence a critical issue.
The dispute over electricity supplies from Slovakia underscores the strained relations between Ukraine and some of its neighbors. While the cutoff is not expected to cause immediate problems for Ukraine's grid, it may signal a shift in the political climate of the region. Continued cooperation between Ukrenergo and SEPS will be vital for maintaining the stability of Ukraine's energy supplies amidst growing challenges.
