Basil Day January 1: What is strictly forbidden to do and what traditions to observe.
According to ТСН: On January 1, Ukrainians celebrate two important holidays - the Circumcision of the Lord and the day of Saint Basil the Great. According to ancient traditions, this day serves as an indicator for the coming year, so there are strict prohibitions on household chores and financial matters.
According to the New Julian church calendar, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Circumcision of the Lord and honor the memory of Saint Basil the Great, known in the folk tradition as Basil Day.
On this day, believers pray to Saint Basil, asking for his protection from troubles, illnesses, and evil people. It is believed that the saint brings peace of mind, protects the family, and cares for students and pig farmers.
At the folk level, it is believed that on January 1, the first man to enter the home should be light-haired - then the year will be happy, prosperous, and successful.
One of the key traditions of this day is sowing: boys go around houses, scattering grain and wishing the hosts health, peace, and abundance. The grains that remain are not thrown away but kept as a talisman until spring when they are sown into the soil.
On Basil Day, desires that are made are believed to have special power and will surely come true. For a fruitful year, hosts invite guests to the festive table and generously share treats, as their ancestors did.
Helping those in need on this day is considered a good sign, as it cleanses the soul and brings a person closer to God. It is said that if the first person encountered in the morning of January 1 is a man, the year will go well.
What should not be done on January 1?
On this day, it is not recommended to borrow money, so as not to live the year in poverty.
Household chores are prohibited: washing, cleaning, sewing, knitting, or embroidering. It is also advised not to take out the trash, as this may take away wealth and happiness from the home.
Additionally, one should avoid quarrels, insults, and disputes. It is especially important that a woman is not the first in the house - according to tradition, this may bring misfortune. A man should step over the threshold first.
