U.S. Issues Diplomatic Protest Over Ukrainian Drone Strike on Novorossiysk Port

Strain in U.S.-Ukraine Relations

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, has confirmed that the U.S. State Department delivered a formal diplomatic protest following a Ukrainian drone attack on the port of Novorossiysk. The ambassador stated that the strike impacted American economic interests, prompting the negative response from Washington. Markarova expressed that she was

"truly upset"
to learn of the protest note, emphasizing the critical need to safeguard the economic interests of both nations.

Attacks Targeting the Novorossiysk Port

This development follows reports that Ukraine's Security Service and other defense forces targeted the Novorossiysk port in late November. Subsequently, in December, a submarine at the same port was also attacked. Ambassador Markarova stressed that enhancing air defense capabilities, securing Ukrainian skies from 'Shahed' drones, and bolstering European participation in Ukraine's defense are vital priorities for both countries.

The ambassador also addressed the political backdrop, noting that this year has been marked by former President Trump's pledge to end the war, adding that

"this commitment is serious."
She recalled the first winter of the full-scale invasion in 2022, when she said about 20 'Shahed' drones and perhaps one missile per week flew overhead. Contrasting that, upon a recent return from Kyiv, she noted a single night with 350 'Shahed' drones recorded, highlighting a dramatic escalation in the air war. The ongoing conflict continues to create complex diplomatic challenges for Ukraine's allies.

Consequently, the fallout from the Novorossiysk port attack continues to strain U.S.-Ukraine relations, underscoring the necessity for close coordination to protect mutual security and economic concerns. Given the intensification of military actions and their implications for international relations, this issue remains pivotal in the ongoing diplomatic dialogue between Kyiv and Washington, particularly against the backdrop of an escalating regional conflict.
