US Secretary of State Outlines Potential Role in Peace Talks
According to TSN.ua: During a press conference with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed hope that the United States could help facilitate an end to the war in Ukraine. He emphasized the severity of the conflict, stating,
"We are considering the role of the United States as an attempt to help end this very deadly, very bloody, and very costly war"- Marco Rubio. He also noted that the US President has spent the past year exploring the possibility of mediating a negotiated peace settlement. This comes as the US seeks to balance its support for Ukraine with diplomatic efforts to end the fighting.
Upcoming Geneva Negotiations
In the context of these peace efforts, a new round of talks with representatives of the Russian Federation is scheduled for Geneva on February 17-18. The Ukrainian delegation will include:
- Rustem Umerov
- Kyrylo Budanov
- Andrii Hnatov
The Russian delegation will be led by Vladimir Medinsky. These talks follow previous trilateral meetings held in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 and February 4-5, which were chaired by Ihor Kostyukov.
This US initiative signals an active American position in seeking pathways to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. The involvement of the United States in the peace negotiations underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war. The Geneva talks could represent a critical stage in the search for a compromise between the parties. Active US participation in this process demonstrates a willingness to support allies and a desire to find a peaceful solution to a situation that has now lasted for over a year.
