The Abrams tanks in the M1A1 variant are increasing vulnerability to anti-tank weapons and are facing logistical and fuel consumption issues, as reported by Army Recognition. The use of these tanks in combat operations in Ukraine has already led to the development of the M1A3 variant, which will be more resilient, lighter, and cost-effective.

The M1A1 Abrams tanks used in Ukraine have shown critical vulnerabilities that have become the basis for enhancement. Anti-tank weapons such as the Javelin and Stugna-P have proved to be threats to these tanks. Additionally, the heavy weight of the tanks and high fuel consumption present logistical challenges.

The new M1A3 Abrams variant will address these issues. It will feature a hybrid-electric powertrain that will reduce fuel consumption by 50%. A modular open systems architecture will also be employed for quick integration of new technologies, an unmanned turret to ensure crew safety, active protection systems to neutralize threats from drones and modern munitions, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence applications to enhance situational awareness and automated targeting.
