A record number of monkeypox cases have been registered in Spain
Since the outbreak of monkeypox in 2022, Spain has recorded 8104 cases of infection, which is a record in Europe. This was reported by Europa Press with reference to information from the country's Ministry of Health. Among the cities of Spain, the leaders in the number of infected were Madrid (2770 cases) and Catalonia (2452 cases).
«Yes, in 2024, 264 people in the kingdom faced monkeypox as of August 8. Most infections are observed among men aged 37 years. The top three among European countries, in addition to Spain, were shared by France and the United Kingdom», – noted the journalists.
Earlier, WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that the monkeypox epidemic, known as mpox, was declared a health emergency. According to him, the situation is of international importance.
It should be noted that Sweden has identified the first case of the monkeypox strain outside of Africa, called Clade I. This strain is considered more contagious and deadly than the previous variant. Olivia Wigzell, head of the Swedish Public Health Agency, reported that the person became infected while staying in a part of Africa where there was a large outbreak of Clade I.
